Well, we
made it to Kenya! Our journey started on the
22nd
of
August from Portland, went through Chicago, then London and
finally finished at the Nairobi airport on the night of the
23rd.
Our 31 pieces of luggage (read footlockers) made it all
safe and sound (including my guitar!). The woman at the
customs desk wanted to have a look at our “packing list”
but when Kristi started talking to her and mentioned she
was “home.” She waved us through without any hassle!
Greeting
us at the airport were our teammates, Gene and Melba
Morden, with their son Abraham as well as Jeff Brown and
two of this three children. The boys immediately started
making fast friends and making lots of noise….30 some hours
on planes and in airports….well, let’s just say they had
some catching up to do (grin).
We got all our things loaded and then Gene’s Land Cruiser
wouldn’t start. We tried different things to get’r to go,
but ended up calling a big taxi. Turns out it was just the
battery, which we got replaced on Monday.
We started looking for a vehicle on Monday morning and
found one Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday morning, we drove
home our 2002 Toyota hardtop Cruiser! This is really a
miracle as it only has 65 thousand kilometers on it (about
40 thousand miles), was owned by the Dutch embassy for one
of their projects and has consequently been well
maintained. One of our biggest fears of purchasing a “used”
vehicle was the condition and the maintenance (or the lack
there of). God really guided our search! It usually takes
about a month to land one once you start looking and (at
least two weeks anyway), and the fact that we were able to
drive it home on just day number three of being in the
country was, well, a miraculous answer to prayer. All the
others we found had more than 250,000 km. Thank you all for
praying!
All of our other “housekeeping” work is essentially wrapped
up, and we are headed to Eldoret tomorrow for about a week
before returning to Nairobi on the 7th
for the
annual KFT meeting (Kenya Field Team). Pray for our journey
north to Eldoret and our safety there. The house we stay in
was robbed the week before we arrived (with the Morden’s
inside….who heard nothing). We know this is a spiritual war
we are in, so we need your spiritual covering! They had
both their computers stolen and some other electronic
things as well as their cell phones. Pray for them as they
continue to process those events and continue their work in
Turkana.
Wyatt is having an asthma flare as well. Since you are
already saying prayers for us, perhaps, if you don’t mind,
pray for him and his asthma. We think it’s the air quality
here in Nairobi. Lot’s of diesel fumes and we’ve been in a
valley. Tomorrow, we’ll drive out of the pollution and
hopefully this will make a big difference.
